There is an tradition in Annapolis, Maryland, people would burn their old socks that used during the winter at the first day of spring every year; to celebrate the equinox.
This totally bizarre tradition began in the mid 1980s by Bob Turner, the manager of the Annapolis Yacht Yard."Apparently, doing maintenance work on various boats during the cold winters was so depressing that he set his socks alight when spring arrived in celebration at the warmer days ahead."
Now the Annapolis Maritime Museum holds an annual Sock Burning Ceremony. This always attracts lots of people and tourists. They would toss their socks and drink wine, eat seafoods and having joy. Also they would generally sit along the port without the need to wear socks. This activity become more and more popular every year, and the number of socks that people burned is too many that can not be counted. The sailors at the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore donated more than 700 pairs of new socks to help individuals at a local mission.
“There’s a whole industry of people who work all winter long on people’s boats so that they’ll be in shape for their owners to go out and play all summer,’” said Mr. Holland.
