In Jared Diamond's "How to Make an Almond", the author showed how the ancient world domesticates the plants through certain processes that due by the natural and artificial. On the other hand, this is also the key and secret of becoming a "qualified" plant for today.
As earth formed, reproduction came after. The fruits back then were always seeking for ways to spread their seeds for reproductions. First, they want people and animals to notice them, while judges by the appearances from the outside it's a human nature, the fruits then "make" themselves as pretty as possible. "Many others trick an animal into carrying their seeds, by wrapping the seed in a tasty fruit and advertising the fruit's ripeness bu its color or smell." The seeds will eventually spread away and it will even be carried for thousands of miles. At the same time,we all think that the bigger the better, so did our ancestors. They only picked the plants which look more promising, as they agreed to the fruit's taste, they would prefer large and big ones, and others will be ignored and unfortunately died out, for example the poisonous almonds. After this, the plantation will carry these selected genes and reproduce on and on until now. As the article says, "The oldest corn cobs are barely more than half an inch long, but Mexican Indian farmers of A.D. 1500 already had developed six - inch cobs, and some modern cobs are one and a half feet long." This is the reason why the fruits and vegetables are so fine and large in the supermarket nowadays. Also, there are still some other plants had been left out, a clear example involves peas, whose seeds come enclosed in a pod. The peas from the very beginning were very different from the modern ones. When they became mature, the peas evolved a gene that makes the pod explode, shooting out the peas onto the ground for its reproduction. Unfortunately, people can only select the peas that left on the plants since others fell into the ground.
The highly technology and science have become more efficiency for dominate the plants in the modern world. It's easy to change the genes of the plants to get the best features. However, this achievement was due by our ancestors, and of course, our smart plants.
